365 Days

]]>'Around the Sun' was a 365 project which I began on September 5, 2009 and completed on September 4, 2010.

For those of you unfamiliar with the concept, the rules were simply to take a self-portrait every day for one year - "you have to hit the shutter button (or remote) and at least some part of you must be in the photo".

My goal was to take myself out of my comfort zone, learn new techniques, and challenge myself on a daily basis. To stretch the imagination and grow as a photographer along the way. Now that the year has passed, I can say that I definitely accomplished all those things which I set out to do but I also know that the education process is endless and I still have much to learn. I look forward to continuing to expand my photographic horizons in the coming years. The project has only fueled my desire for more.

]]>I had never taken any photography classes before and, wanting to improve my skills both in technique and composition, I signed up for a SLR class at a local community college. In my first class, we were given 10 minutes to run outside and take photos of circles. It made me see my surroundings in a completely different way -- and made my eye pick up details in the landscape that I had never considered previously.

The class also served as an exercise to move away from the safety of automatic settings. I've used my DSLR on manual settings before, but it was the first time that I also incorporated manual focus. It brought back fond memories of my SLR camera from years past; an Asiahi Pentax Spotmatic which I still own but have not picked up since my now husband bought me my Sony DSLR for Christmas in 2007.
